In this 1953 thriller, a police officer apparently committed suicide, but Detective Dave Bannion (Glenn Ford) is suspicious, so he finds the man's mob-connected lover and uncovers vast corruption involving everyone from the police station to kingpin Mike Lagana (Alexander Scourby). When the policeman's mistress is murdered, however, Bannion realizes the folly of crossing Lagana, who places Bannion and his family in mortal danger.

Based on the novel by W. Bruce Cameron, this film tells the story of three dogs who are really one dog, reborn, pursuing a purpose. It's a story about the human - dog relationship and the truths dogs can teach people. As such it's a happy and sad film about dogs and the families they love, likely to make people of all ages cry at certain points, especially when the dogs die. The film is praised for its many positive messages and for the performances of both the people and the dogs. Dog lovers say they love it.
