All You've Wanted to Know About Victorian Architecture -- but Were Afraid to Ask. In this program, local historian Ray Hillman illuminates Victorian architecture by centering upon three essentials, the first being a consideration of the era’s namesake, Queen Victoria. The second is that Victorian architecture is not really a style, but a progression of styles, each more elaborate than the one before. Thirdly, one can recognize the different Victorian styles by the architectural details. Ray will show us how to do so with a slide show followed by a show-and-tell featuring actual ornamentation—redwood, iron, bronze, glass, and terra cotta—saved from long ago demolished Victorians, all from his personal collection amassed over nearly sixty years.

Five copies are provided by FOAL for loan, in addition to those in the library collection, so check with the library if you need a copy. Participants are expected to read the featured title. Drop-ins are welcome, but comments from those who have read the book hold special merit. No topic is off limits; there is no censorship, but the interests of the group matter.

Hear Chris Van Allsburg's 'The Polar Express' read aloud, then get your ticket with a bell, sip hot chocolate, and ALL ABOARD! for showtime. The film takes you on a mysterious train ride to visit Santa Claus. A child who doubts the existence of Santa boards the Polar Express to see for himself in this 2004 animated movie. Like Van Allsburg's picture books (which include Jumanji and The Garden of Abdul Gasazi), the film combines dreamlike magic and mystery with unusually beautiful artistic scenes that hold more than a touch of the eerie and strange. The film is praised for these qualities and for its positive messages about friendship, hope, kindness and leadership.

In this longer version, little Cindy Lou becomes the heroine. The Grinch lives outside of town on his mountaintop and is disliked and feared by all the Whos of Whoville, but Cindy Lou's first meeting with him is different as he happens to save her life. Cindy Lou is curious about the Grinch instead of hostile, and she sets out to discover what happened to him as a youngster and how he became the bitter, angry grump he has become. She then makes it her mission to include him in the joys of Whoville's Christmas celebration, although the town mayor hates this idea, and up to the last moment the Grinch himself is planning on destroying Christmas for all of Whoville. In the happy ending love conquers both greed and bitterness, and all is well in Whoville.
